Professor Jan Burns gained
her first degree in Psychology from the University of Manchester.
She then went on to complete her PhD within the University
of Wales, researching the quality of life of people with
learning disabilities. Gaining her Masters in Clinical Psychology
from the University of Leeds she started to practice as
a clinician within forensic services. Throughout this time
she maintained her interest within the field of learning
disabilities, developing services for working with people
with learning disabilities who become involved within the
legal system. Returning to the University of Leeds she became
a lecturer on the Clinical Psychology Training Scheme in
addition to working as a researcher and practitioner within
an NHS Trust. She then took up a position as Academic Director
within the South Thames (Salomons) Clinical Psychology Training
Scheme. Throughout this time she has published in the areas
of learning disabilities, health psychology, service evaluation
and gender in clinical psychology. These publications have
echoed an interest in the politics, values and the social
context of psychology within the clinical field. In 2005 she
took on the role as Joint Clinical Psychology Programmes
Director.
