Information on Mediation Support
This support is offered in situations where relationships have broken down, or are in process of breakdown, within a practice or professional setting. Mediation can clarify the main issues to be addressed within the organisation, by the individuals concerned, or in management processes. Mediation can contribute to more constructive processes and outcomes in emotive and complex situations, as well as offer an external perspective on sometimes difficult circumstances.
The process can vary according to the needs of the individuals involved or the circumstances of the situation, but usually the following would be considered:
- Individual meetings of each party with the mediator.
- A summary (verbal or written) of this meeting provided to the individual of their respective meeting.
- A meeting with all parties and the mediator, outlining the summaries agreed from the individual meetings. At this meeting the mediator will offer their perspective and understanding of the main issues under consideration. Discussion will be facilitated between the parties. A summary (verbal or written) will be provided to both parties at the end of the meeting. All parties will be asked to agree to another member of the organisation, a manager or HR officer, being present to observe at this meeting.
- The objective of this process is to reach and agree a ‘next steps plan’, which can be reviewed at a further meeting to be agreed. Confidentiality, terms of reference and clear objectives will be agreed and borne in mind throughout the process.
'How can the EAP help?
Family problems, marital or relationship difficulties, bereavement, work pressures, career uncertainties, alcohol or drug abuse, emotional turmoil that is persistent: these can be addressed through the programme provided by us. The emphasis is on practical solutions to problems that you cannot resolve alone, helping you to help yourself. Our practitioners will not tell you what to do, but will help to clarify your thoughts and define quickly the nature of your problem. By understanding the full range of options available you can move towards a solution, or plan for deepening your understanding of what is needed, with confidence that professional and confidential support is at hand.
What does the EAP provide?
" An independent and confidential professional consultancy and support service for all employees.
" A reflective space to address how to handle difficult and sensitive issues with colleagues, friends or family.
" Practical input to plan solutions and activities to address legal and financial problems. Please note that we do not provide expert legal or financial advice.
" A service that is extended to your immediate family household, recognising that both domestic and work problems can bear so heavily on an individual.
" A clear and professional assessment of any long-term needs that the EAP cannot directly provide, should this prove necessary and appropriate.
Who are the programme's consultants?
All the consultants contributing to the EAP are experienced and trained
professionals in health and social care, for example we have access to clinical psychologists with specialist expertise in supporting adults,
children, adolescents, older people and people with learning
disabilities. Consultants who contribute to our programme have worked
with health service staff from a range of backgrounds and seniority
levels, including executive coaching, career development and team
building work. It will be ensured that you work with a professional
who is independent to you and your work and with whom you are
comfortable to engage with.'
